A Perfect Summer Evening in... July 17, 2026

Plays in the Park Edison NJ | A Perfect Summer Evening in Edison & Metuchen

There’s something special about a summer evening in New Jersey… dinner on a patio, live theater under the stars, and ending the night with Italian ice. If you’re looking for an affordable night out that’s full of local charm, here’s one of my favorite ways to spend a summer evening in Middlesex County.

Start with Dinner

Before the curtain goes up, enjoy dinner in downtown Metuchen, just minutes from Roosevelt Park.

A few local favorites include:

  • Wood Stack Pizza Kitchen for artisan wood-fired pizzas and a lively atmosphere.
  • Hailey’s Harp & Pub for classic Irish pub fare, burgers, and a great selection of drinks.
  • Phattra Thai Restaurant for authentic Thai cuisine packed with fresh flavors.

Metuchen’s walkable downtown makes it a wonderful place to begin your evening before heading over to the theater.

An Affordable Broadway-Style Experience

This summer, Plays-in-the-Park at the Stephen J. Capestro Theatre in Roosevelt Park is presenting the Tony Award-winning musical 1776 from July 8–18, with performances beginning at 8:00 p.m. (no Sunday performances). It’s one of Middlesex County’s most beloved summer traditions, offering Broadway-quality productions in a beautiful outdoor amphitheater.

Tickets are incredibly affordable:

  • Adults: $8
  • Seniors (60+): $5
  • Children 12 and under: Free

And sold at the box office on the evening of the performance, so there’s no need to purchase in advance. Bring your own lawn chairs, settle in under the summer sky, and enjoy an unforgettable night of live theater.

For schedules and additional information, visit Middlesex County Plays-in-the-Park or read more on New Jersey Stage.

Cool Off with Something Sweet

With temperatures climbing this week, there’s no better way to end the evening than with a frozen treat.

Some local favorites include:

  • DiCosmo’s Italian Ice
  • What’s the Scoop
  • Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard

Whether you’re craving classic Italian ice, frozen custard, or a generous scoop of homemade ice cream, you’ll find the perfect way to cool off just minutes away.

Don’t Miss Roosevelt Park

Even if you’re not attending a performance, Roosevelt Park is worth a visit all on its own.

Conveniently located off Route 1 near Menlo Park Mall, this beautiful 217-acre county park offers something for everyone. You’ll find scenic walking and biking trails, picnic areas with grills, baseball and soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, an eight-acre lake for fishing, and seasonal skating. It’s an ideal destination for families, couples, or anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors on a summer day.

My Take

As someone who loves exploring everything our local communities have to offer, evenings like this remind me why I love living and working in North Central New Jersey. Great food, beautiful parks, affordable entertainment, and small-town charm are just some of the things that make this area such a wonderful place to call home.

If you’re looking for a fun summer outing, I highly recommend making an evening of it in Edison and Metuchen.
